Therapy for College Students
At their best, the college years can transform our identity, stretch the bounds of our awareness, and produce life-long personal and professional connections. The college years can also bring about hardship, particularly among students from underrepresented and under-resourced backgrounds. I had the privilege to complete much of my pre- and post-doctoral training in college counseling settings. I’ve worked with students from a range of institutions, from large, Big-10 universities, to urban commuter schools, to a small, private art college.
From these experiences, I understand that the range of student presenting concerns is as diverse as the student body itself. So many students pursue their degrees in the face of tremendous adversity, which may often be invisible to their peers and professors. I’ve supported students as they navigate many challenges unique to the college experience, including:
International student adjustment
Graduate student concerns
Academic difficulty
Adjustment of students of color at primarily White institutions
LGBTQ students exploring identity and coming out
Homesickness
Undecided major
Making friends and “finding your people”
“Non-traditional” students concerns, like navigating parenting and full time work
Navigating difficult roommate relationships
